Short answerBeing pregnant doesn’t open a Marketplace Special Enrollment Period, but the birth of a child does, and you have 60 days after the birth to enroll.[1] Medicaid can start any time of year.[1] In Michigan, Pregnant Women Medicaid has an income limit of 195% of the poverty level and continues through 12 months after the pregnancy ends.[2,3]

If you don’t have coverage now

  • All Marketplace and Medicaid plans cover pregnancy and childbirth, even if the pregnancy began before coverage started.[1]
  • Apply for Medicaid any time of year, directly with the state (MDHHS) or through a HealthCare.gov application that asks for help paying.[1]
  • Michigan counts a pregnant woman as at least two people for the income test, which raises the limit for your household.[4]
  • Otherwise, enroll during Open Enrollment (November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027) or with another qualifying life event, like losing coverage or moving.[5,6]

If you already have a Marketplace plan

  • Reporting your pregnancy may qualify you for Medicaid or CHIP; if you’re found eligible, you won’t be able to keep the Marketplace plan.[1]
  • After the birth, add your baby within 60 days, or enroll the baby in Medicaid or CHIP if eligible.[1]

After the baby arrives

  • A baby born on Medicaid is automatically enrolled and stays eligible for at least a year.[1]
  • Michigan’s postpartum Medicaid continues for 12 months regardless of income changes.[3] When it ends, losing it can open a Marketplace enrollment window.[6] See losing Medicaid and family coverage.
