Six steps to a 2027 plan
- Know the dates. Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 for a January 1 start.
- Gather your info. Social Security numbers for people applying, your expected 2027 income, and any employer coverage information.
- Estimate 2027 household income. Your premium tax credit is based on it, and since 2026 there’s no cap on paying back excess credit.
- Check your doctors and drugs in each plan’s network and formulary.
- Compare total cost, not just premium: deductible, out-of-pocket maximum, and Silver cost-sharing savings if you qualify.
- Enroll and pay the first premium. Coverage doesn’t start until it’s paid.

On your own or with help?
You can always enroll on your own at HealthCare.gov. Marketplace premiums are the same whether you enroll yourself or with a licensed agent, and Nexus doesn’t charge you for enrollment help.
Already enrolled? HealthCare.gov says you may be automatically re-enrolled if you don’t act by December 15, but not always. Update your income either way.

- The enhanced credits expired. The larger premium tax credits from the American Rescue Plan and Inflation Reduction Act ended December 31, 2025 and have not been extended for 2027. The House passed a three-year extension on January 8, 2026; the Senate has not. [healthinsurance.org; KFF; CNBC]
- The regular ACA credit still applies. For 2027, the expected contribution toward the benchmark Silver plan runs from 2.15% to 10.22% of household income. [healthinsurance.org, citing IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-26]
- The 400% cliff is back. Above 400% of the federal poverty level there is no federal credit: about $63,840 for one person or $132,000 for a family of four for 2027 coverage. [healthinsurance.org]
- No repayment cap. Starting with 2026 coverage, if you get too much advance credit you repay all of the excess at tax time. [26 U.S.C. §36B; OBBBA §71305]
Status as of October 15, 2026. Congress could still change this.
Rates: Michigan insurers requested an average 14.2% increase for 2027 (proposed). See Open Enrollment 2027. Missed the window? See Special Enrollment.
