Covering your family in Michigan

  • Kids can stay on a parent’s plan until 26, married or not, living at home or not. [HealthCare.gov]
  • Children’s dental and vision are essential health benefits. Every Marketplace plan covers kids’ vision, and children’s dental must be available, either in the health plan or as a separate dental plan. [HealthCare.gov] See dental & vision.
  • New baby or adoption? That’s a Special Enrollment event, so you can add the child outside Open Enrollment. [HealthCare.gov]
  • One household, one application. The Marketplace counts the income of everyone in your tax household, including dependents who must file.

MIChild and Healthy Kids

Michigan covers many children through Medicaid. MIChild covers uninsured children under 19 in households up to 212% of the poverty level, and Healthy Kids is free for lower incomes. [MDHHS BEM 211; MDHHS MIChild]

Some families end up with kids on MIChild or Healthy Kids and parents on a Marketplace plan. Apply any time at MI Bridges.

Monthly full-price premiums for non-tobacco users before any premium tax credit. “Benchmark” is the second-lowest-cost Silver plan, which sets the size of the tax credit. 2027 plans and prices aren’t published yet.

*Family of 4 = two adults age 40 and two children, per the CMS file’s “Couple + 2 children, age 40” rate.

For 2027 coverage, the tax credit stops above 400% of the poverty level, about $132,000 for a family of four. Below that, the most you’re expected to pay for the benchmark Silver plan is 10.22% of household income. [healthinsurance.org; IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-26]

Have a job-based family plan that costs too much?

Since 2023, whether your spouse and kids can get Marketplace credits depends on what family coverage at your job costs, not just your own coverage. If the family premium is more than the affordability limit (10.22% of household income for 2027), your family members may qualify for credits even if your own coverage counts as affordable. [IRS; CMS “family glitch” guidance; IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-26]

Some families do best splitting up: one parent on the job plan, everyone else on a Marketplace plan. We run the numbers both ways.

Frequently asked questions

How much is family health insurance in Michigan?

It depends on ages, county, plan and income. In the 2026 CMS plan file, the benchmark Silver plan for two 40-year-old adults and two children was about $1,240.60 a month in Genesee County and $2,022.54 in Saginaw County at full price. Many families pay less after a premium tax credit.

Can my kids get MIChild if I buy a Marketplace plan?

Possibly. MIChild covers uninsured children under 19 in households up to 212% of the poverty level. Kids can be on MIChild or Healthy Kids while parents use a Marketplace plan. Apply through MI Bridges.

Until what age can my child stay on my health plan?

Until age 26 on Marketplace and most job-based plans.

My employer's family plan is expensive. Can my family get a subsidy?

Maybe. Since 2023, family members are tested on the cost of family coverage. If it's more than 10.22% of household income for 2027, your spouse and kids may qualify for Marketplace credits.

Do Marketplace plans cover children's dental and vision?

All Marketplace plans cover children's vision. Children's dental must be available, either in the health plan or through a separate dental plan, but you don't have to buy it.

Will you sell my information?
