Short answerIn Kent County, the 2026 benchmark Silver plan for a couple both aged 50 was $1,317.74 a month at full price, and $2,002.44 for a couple both 60.[1] Many couples pay less after a premium tax credit, which is generally available from 100% to 400% of the poverty level now that the extra credits expired.[2,3]

Ways couples keep costs down

  • Estimate income carefully. Tax credits are based on expected household income for the year; excess credit is reconciled at tax time.[5,6] See what counts as income.
  • Self-employed? You may be able to deduct premiums for yourself and your spouse with Form 7206, within its limits.[7] See the Form 7206 guide.
  • One spouse has job coverage? If the job offer to the family is unaffordable under the 2022 family-glitch fix, the other spouse may qualify for a credit.[8]
  • One of you turning 65 first? Plan the older spouse’s move to Medicare ahead of time. See early retirees.
