Rules that trip people up

  • On HealthCare.gov you can buy a dental plan only when you’re also buying a health plan there.
  • Separate dental plans can have waiting periods for adult services, and you pay premiums during the wait.
  • Outside HealthCare.gov, insurers also sell dental plans on their own, with no health plan needed. Terms vary by plan.

Three ways to get dental coverage on your own

With a Marketplace plan

Add a stand-alone dental plan when you pick a health plan on HealthCare.gov during Open Enrollment (Nov 1, 2026 to Jan 15, 2027).

Dental-only, off-Marketplace

Buy a dental plan straight from an insurer, without a health plan. Useful if you already have medical coverage elsewhere.

Through a business

Own a business? Dental can be part of small-business benefits.

Guides: dental for the self-employed, family and early-retiree dental, and waiting periods explained.

How to compare dental plans

  1. Start with what you need. Cleanings only, or a crown or implant coming up? That decides which plan types make sense.
  2. Check the waiting period for that service, in writing.
  3. Compare the annual maximum with your dentist’s estimate.
  4. Check that your dentist is in network before you enroll.
