From the CMS plan year 2026 dental file for Michigan: [CMS QHP Landscape Individual Market Dental PY2026]
- 37 stand-alone dental plans from 10 companies were sold on HealthCare.gov statewide, with 25–37 available in any one county (for example 34 in Kent, 37 in Wayne and 32 in Grand Traverse).
- Adult premiums at age 40 ran from $10.06 to $42.59 a month. Child premiums started at $12.00.
- 11 of 37 plans didn’t cover major adult dental care (like crowns or bridges), and only 4 listed adult orthodontia.

Rules that trip people up
- On HealthCare.gov you can’t buy a dental plan unless you’re buying a health plan at the same time.
- Separate dental plans can have waiting periods for adult services. You pay premiums during the wait, so ask before you enroll.
- You can cancel a separate dental plan any time and keep your health plan.

Kids vs. adults
Children (18 and under): dental is an essential health benefit, so it must be available with every Marketplace plan, either built in or as a separate plan. You don’t have to buy it. [HealthCare.gov] In every one of Michigan’s 2026 Marketplace dental plans, the yearly out-of-pocket maximum for one child’s covered care was $450. [CMS PY2026]
Adults: dental isn’t an essential health benefit, so plans vary widely in what they cover, waiting periods and annual maximums.
Vision
All Marketplace health plans include vision coverage for children. Adult vision isn’t an essential health benefit, and only some plans include it. [HealthCare.gov] Adults who want routine eye exams and glasses usually buy a separate vision plan outside HealthCare.gov. An advisor can compare those with you.
How to choose
Need work soon?
Look for plans without a waiting period on the service you need. Compare the annual maximum with your dentist’s estimate.
Just cleanings?
A low-premium plan covering preventive care may be enough. Do the math against paying your dentist directly.
Kids?
Check whether your health plan already includes children’s dental before adding a separate plan. See family coverage.
Dental and vision are add-ons to medical coverage. Start with your health plan: see Open Enrollment 2027. Employers: dental and vision can be part of small-business benefits.
