How waiting periods work

A waiting period is the time after your plan starts before it pays for a type of service. HealthCare.gov warns that separate dental plans can have waiting periods for adult services, and you pay premiums during the wait. [HealthCare.gov]

“No waiting period” usually applies to some services, often preventive care like cleanings, not everything. A plan can have no wait for cleanings and a long wait for crowns. Always check the specific service.

Questions to ask before you enroll

  • Is there a waiting period for the exact service I need, and how long?
  • Does the plan waive waiting periods if I had dental coverage until recently?
  • What’s the annual maximum, and how much of my treatment will it cover?
  • Is my dentist in network?

Need work done soon?

Get a written estimate from your dentist first. Then compare: premiums for the months you’d pay, the waiting period, the plan’s share and the annual maximum. Sometimes paying the dentist directly is cheaper; sometimes a plan clearly wins. We’ll run the math with you.

  • 37 stand-alone dental plans from 10 companies were sold on HealthCare.gov in Michigan, with 25–37 available in any one county.
  • Adult premiums at age 40 ran from $10.06 to $42.59 a month. Child premiums started at $12.00.
  • 11 of 37 didn’t cover major adult dental care (like crowns or bridges), and only 4 listed adult orthodontia.
  • Only 8 of 116 Michigan medical plans included adult dental, so most adults who want dental add a separate plan.
