Kids vs. adults

Children (18 and under): dental is an essential health benefit, so it must be available with every Marketplace plan, either built in or as a separate plan. You don’t have to buy it. [HealthCare.gov]

In every one of Michigan’s 2026 Marketplace dental plans, the yearly out-of-pocket maximum for one child’s covered care was $450. [CMS QHP Landscape Individual Market Dental PY2026]

Adults: dental isn’t an essential health benefit, so coverage, waiting periods and annual maximums vary a lot by plan.

Check whether your health plan already includes children’s dental before adding a separate plan: in 2026, 13 of 116 Michigan Marketplace medical plans did. [CMS QHP Landscape Individual Market Dental PY2026]

Retiring before 65?

Leaving a job usually ends work dental too. Losing job-based health coverage opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period for a Marketplace health plan, and you can add a dental plan when you enroll. [HealthCare.gov]
