Moving to Michigan (or within it): how to get health insurance

A move can let you enroll outside Open Enrollment, but only for 60 days, and you may have to prove it. Here’s how it works.

Your info goes to Nexus only and is never sold. Not to a call center, not to a list of “partners.”

  • 60-day window
  • New ZIP or county
  • Documents may be needed

Why we ask: Your ZIP and household size decide which plans and prices you can get. Your phone number and email go to Nexus Benefit Solutions only, to answer this request, and are never sold.

This is a request for help, not an application for coverage. Nexus Benefit Solutions is a private, independent agency and is not affiliated with HealthCare.gov, CMS, the State of Michigan or DIFS. Please don't include medical details in this form.

Short answerYou may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you move to a new home in a new ZIP code or county, or to the U.S. from a foreign country or U.S. territory.[1] You must pick a plan within 60 days of the move, or you’ll wait for the next Open Enrollment unless another life event applies.[2]

Moves that can qualify

  • A new home in a new ZIP code or county.[1]
  • A move to the U.S. from a foreign country or U.S. territory.[1]
  • A move to or from the place you attend school (students), the place you both live and work (seasonal workers), or a shelter or transitional housing.[1]

Doesn’t qualify: moving only for medical treatment, or staying somewhere on vacation.[1]

Proving the move

  • You may be asked for documents; your Eligibility Notice will say so.[2]
  • Pick a plan first, then send documents within 30 days.[2]
  • You can’t use the coverage until the Marketplace confirms your eligibility and you pay your first premium.[2] If delays kept you from using it, you may pay earlier months’ premiums and get retroactive coverage.[2]

Your Michigan options

  • Michigan uses HealthCare.gov. In 2026, between 2 and 7 insurers sold plans in each county, so the choice depends on where you land.[3] See insurers by county.
  • Low income? Michigan adults 19 to 64 at or below 133% of poverty may qualify for the Healthy Michigan Plan, which you can apply for any time.[4,5]
  • Moving in the fall? Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027.[6]

Pick a plan within 60 days of the move. After that, you wait for Open Enrollment unless another life event applies.
