Auto re-enrollment for 2027: what happens if you do nothing
HealthCare.gov will usually renew your plan for you. That keeps you covered, but it can also keep you in a plan whose price or savings changed. Here is how it works and what to check.

How the Marketplace picks your 2027 plan
Federal rules set the order:[3]
- Same plan, if your insurer still offers it on the Marketplace.
- Same product and metal level with the most similar network, if your plan ends.
- Silver stays Silver where possible: a Silver enrollee moves to the same insurer’s most similar Silver plan before any change of metal level.
- One level up or down within the same insurer, then any other plan from that insurer.
- A different insurer only if yours leaves, as directed by the state or in a similar plan chosen by the Marketplace.
Someone who no longer qualifies for a Catastrophic plan is moved to a Bronze plan where state law allows, and the Marketplace can’t move a metal-level enrollee into Catastrophic coverage.[3] An insurer can’t move you to a different plan based on your health or how much care you use.[1]
Why doing nothing can cost you
- Your savings are based on next year’s income, not past years. If you don’t update your application you could get less help than you qualify for, or more, and have to pay back the difference at tax time.[4] See paying back the premium tax credit.
- Prices are changing. Every Michigan insurer that filed to sell on HealthCare.gov for 2027 asked for an increase, and 50 of 185 individual plans filed increases of 15% or more:[5]
| Insurer (sells on HealthCare.gov) | Requested 2027 change | Plans (on or off Marketplace) | Plans at 15%+ | Plans on HealthCare.gov |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Priority Health | 11.1% | 54 | 11 | 40 |
| Blue Care Network of Michigan | 12.5% | 30 | 5 | 24 |
| UnitedHealthcare Community Plan | 25.5% | 30 | 16 | 24 |
| Meridian Health Plan of Michigan | 24.4% | 22 | 10 | 18 |
| Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan | 12.9% | 11 | 3 | 8 |
| Oscar Insurance Company | 11.9% | 10 | 1 | 10 |
| McLaren Health Plan Community | 16.3% | 6 | 4 | 6 |
Michigan DIFS, as filed and subject to approval, updated July 14, 2026; approved rates were still listed as “TBD” when we checked on October 16, 2026. The totals of 185 and 50 include insurers that sell only off the Marketplace. DIFS notes that individual changes vary by plan, area and tobacco use.[5]
- Sometimes you won’t be re-enrolled at all. HealthCare.gov says that in some cases you must enroll during Open Enrollment to keep coverage.[4] And coverage only starts once you pay your first premium.[1]
- Tax-data permission. The Marketplace needs your permission to pull updated tax information at renewal. One authorization can last up to five years, and you can change or renew it at any time.[3]
Your 2027 renewal checklist
- By November 1: watch for two letters, one from your insurer and one from the Marketplace, showing the plan you’re matched with and changes in coverage and savings.[4]
- From November 1: log in, update your expected 2027 income and household, and compare the matched plan with the others.[4,1]
- December 15: last day to pick a plan that starts January 1. To stop automatic re-enrollment, open your current-year application, go to “My Plans & Programs” and select stop coverage by this date.[1,2]
- December 16 on: your account may show a message that you’ve been re-enrolled. If you don’t want it, log in by December 31 to stop the coverage from starting.[1]
- January 15: Open Enrollment ends. A plan you pick December 16 to January 15 starts February 1.[2]
