Which plans work with an HSA

  • As of January 1, 2026, Bronze and Catastrophic plans bought through the Marketplace are treated as HSA-compatible.[3]
  • HealthCare.gov lets you filter for “Eligible for an HSA” when you preview plans.[4]
  • You must stop contributing once you enroll in any part of Medicare.[2]
  • Generally, insurance premiums aren’t qualified medical expenses for HSA withdrawals.[2]

Is a Bronze-plus-HSA setup right for you?

A Bronze plan pays about 60% of covered costs on average.[5] If your income qualifies for Silver cost-sharing reductions, Silver may cost less overall. See Bronze vs. Silver. Self-employed? The self-employed deduction works alongside an HSA.
